2018-2019 SFL Round 26 wrap-up
Friday night lights at the Pro Futsal Centre in Bibra Lake, and round 26 of the Nike State Futsal League commenced with Stirling Braza Ginga FC defeating a gallant Joondalup ECU Jets 3-2. Braza’s new Brazilian recruit Fernando De Paula took out man-of-the-match honours with a brace of goals to take his tally to 4 goals in only 3 matches played.
The 2nd match of the evening saw a familiar outcome this season with Cockburn EWA FC defeating Fremantle FC 5-1. This was EWA’s 4th comfortable victory over Fremantle this season (including the WA Invitational Futsal Cup), with Brandon De Abreu scoring twice. He now has 11 goals in 22 appearances this season. This was supposed to be the match of the round.
The final match of the evening and what turned out to be the match-of-the-round saw Rockingham Cambio Cumbre FC draw with Perth Longobarda FC 3-3. The draw was not enough to bring Longobarda back into the Top 6, but they certainly applied themselves well and took an early 2-0 lead and later a 3-1 lead, with Marco Tomassetti excelling in front of goal with a brace. He now has 9 goals in 23 appearances this season. But, Cumbre never gave up. Despite trailing 3-1 with 5 minutes to play, Rockingham came back to draw with Chandra Nagendran chipping in with 2 goals (to take his season tally to 11 goals in 19 matches). Nagendran followed up on his form from the previous weekend when his finished the WA Invitational Futsal Cup as the tournament’s top goal scorer with 9 goals in 7 matches.
Saturday’s matches began with Murdoch Warriors FC thumping South Perth FC 11-3. The victory took Murdoch to 4th on the table, their highest position all season. Justin Pearce again took the plaudits with 5 goals. Pearce now has 9 goals in his last 2 matches & his season tally is 22 goals in 23 games. Pearce was ably assisted by Meysam Kanani, whose brace of goals took him to 16 goals in 26 matches.
This match was followed up by The Derby, with Spearwood Lions FC defeating Perth AFC 5-3 in an exhilarating encounter. In a match that seesawed back & forth, the score line was tied 3-3 with 2 minutes to go before Spearwood took out the victory with 2 late goals from stalwart Jamal Yusof (who now has 30 goals in 25 appearances). Chris Castro also chipped in with 2 goals (to take his injury hit season to 4 goals in 11 matches). Nathan Thorp is having an outstanding season for AFC and his hattrick in this match took his season total to 18 goals in only 17 appearances.
In the final match of the round Curtin Footballista FC defeated Balga FC 7-2 in a high scoring and entertaining match. Mason Vojdani starred for Footballista with his 3rd hattrick of the season (28 goals in 23 matches). He was ably assisted by Farzam Mehrabi, whose brace took him to 23 goals in 23 appearances. Vojdani and Mehrabi have been instrumental in driving Curtin in their 1st season in the State Futsal League as they look to maintain their position in the Top 6 of the league and a spot in the finals in June.
