2018-2019 WSFL Grand final
2nd placed Fremantle FC took on 3rd placed Cockburn EWA FC in a match-up of the competition’s best defense taking on the competition’s leading offense. In front of a packed house at the Pro Futsal Centre in Bibra Lake, both sides flew out of the blocks: Fremantle took an early lead through spearhead Christiane Astorp and EWA replied in quickfire time via Sadie Lawrence. Both goals coming in the first minute.
Cockburn controlled the remainder of the first half as they used their star-studded roster to time and again get away from Fremantle’s full-court-press. Fremantle’s own star recruit Clara Darde kept EWA at bay with some breathtaking saves, until Tia Stonehill scored halfway through the first half to give Cockburn a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Marianna Tabain scored early in the second half to give EWA a 2 goal lead. Fremantle battled hard, with coach Daniel Muzzarelli using his bench well, as Daniella Simatos scored in the final minute against a tiring Cockburn outfit. And with the stop clock in play, Fremantle still had 30 seconds to find the equalizer. But EWA used their experience to keep possession of the ball as the clocked ticked away. And the title passed from South Perth to Cockburn with a 3-2 victory over Fremantle. With the win, EWA have secured their first Women’s State Futsal League title. Sadie Lawrence took out player-of-the-match honours.
2018-2019 DWSFL grand final
In the Draft Women’s State Futsal League (DWSFL), effectively, the women’s reserves league, 1st placed Fremantle FC took on 2nd placed Perth AFC for the 2nd time in 3 weeks. After playing out a low scoring and tense preliminary semi-final in which Fremantle came out on top in extra time, the grand final was awaited with a lot of anticipation.
In front of a full house, an entertaining end-to-end encounter was won 5-1 by Fremantle. The match was much closer than the result. Fremantle certainly started with the feet on the peddle and took a 3-0 lead into half-time, courtesy of Penny Rinaldi, Aleisha West and Daniella Simatos. But they had youngster Indi Casilli to thank for keeping a clean sheet in that half.
Perth AFC came back in the 2nd half with Caitlyn Lewis scoring early. But Fremantle showed why they had finished the regular season on top, and their strength in depth allowed them to score 2 more goals, with Drewan Kennedy-Baxter and Grace Smith getting on the scoresheet, to round out the match. Grace Smith taking out player-of-the-match honours.
With the SFL Grand Final taking place on Friday 5th July, the action continues on Saturday with the 2019 WA State Futsal League Awards Night. Hosted at The Monk, it will be an evening not to be missed with celebrations all around including MVPs, Top Goal Scorers and Golden Glove awards for all of the senior leagues. This season, we will also include a selection of the Best Goals of the Year, for the attendees to vote on!
