2018-2019 SFL Round 19 wrap-up

The double-header weekend culminated on Sunday with another round of exhilarating matches. An epic 3-3 draw between Rockingham Cambio Cumbre FC and Curtin Footballista FC kicked off the proceedings. Chandra Nagendran scored an extraordinary goal for Cumbre from the halfway line but followed that up with 2 quick fire bookings to receive his marching orders, all in the first half. Mason Vojdani (2 goals) showcased why he is one of the stalwarts of the State Futsal League taking his season tally to an inspiring 22 goals in 18 matches.

This exceptional match was followed up by Fremantle FC taking on newcomers Balga FC. Balga had surprised Fremantle with a thrilling comeback earlier in the season, but Fremantle were ready this time around and, despite trailing 2-1 at half-time, ran out 5-2 winners. Moh Totonchy starred for Fremantle with 2 goals, taking his tally to 3 goals in 2 matches since his mid-season transfer from Braza.

Speaking of Braza, Stirling Braza Ginga FC displayed that form is temporary but class is permanent, taking their second victory of the weekend 4-1 versus  Spearwood Lions FC with the goals being shared around. Ashley Green again impressed in goals for Braza, conceding only 1 goal in 2 matches, whilst youngster Mitch Norman put in a captivating performance and scored a thrilling goal.

Murdoch Warriors FC are proving to be the draw specialists this season, after a stimulating 3-3 draw with Perth AFC, who tightened their defence in this match. That was Murdoch’s 6 draw in 19 matches this season. Oscar Pit is proving to be the mid-season addition of the season so far with 2 goals in this match for AFC, taking his tally to 5 in only 4 matches. Nathan Thorp received his marching orders, perhaps unfairly, for his first yellow & red cards of the season. He too is having a strong season with 12 goals in 14 matches. AFC will miss him for their Round 20 match against Balga.

South Perth FC’s topsy-turvy season continued with a 2-7 loss to Perth Longobarda FC. Yougster Jack Tozawa (2 goals) impressed for South Perth, taking his tally to 4 goals in 3 matches since being promoted from the Youth Squad. He is certainly one for the future. Longobarda, though, controlled this match from the first whistle, taking an early lead and never looking back. Mid-season transfer (from South Perth) Luca Bergomi with a point to prove scored a hattrick. He was ably assisted by Robert Armellini with 2 goals, taking his season tally to an imposing 15 goals in 19 matches.

The final match of a blockbuster weekend saw Joondalup ECU Jets nearly upset the defending champions Cockburn EWA FC, ultimately falling to a 2-3 loss. The victory extended EWA’s winning streak to an outstanding 9 wins in a row, in the process displaying that they are once again the team to beat for the SFL title this season.
