2018-2019 WSFL Preview: Perth AFC
Last Season: 5th
An almighty campaign in only their second season in the WSFL nearly had the new kids on the block lock up a finals berth. Spurred on by sparkling performances from Kat Jukic and ably backed by Danielle Caruso between the sticks Perth AFC bloodied the noses of the established powerhouses in the winter. Now to go one better in the summer.
Rob Caruso looks to have avoided the raids that saw Ingrid Gomez Basallo leave for South Perth after their debut season, the perfect tonic to start the summer season. With the outdoor game shelved these next few months that could mean futsal returns for Daisy Spill and striking sensation Steph Funnekotter, even if her surname would cost a fortune in printing. With Stirling having folded in stunning fashion and the vultures circling, can they tempt Bonnie McCleay or Ellie La Monte in the front door?
You could make an argument to go with what they have. Megan Connp and Gabbi Wheatley team stalwarts in previous seasons for a side that continue to go from strength to strength. Ever the man with a plan, Rob Caruso and Perth AFC as always look prepared and ready to tackle the season ahead. Now to grab that top four spot.
Main Lady: Kat Jukic
Sometimes goalkeeper, full time superstar. Her mazy runs and thunderous shot get the fans off their seats and AFC up the table. The club stunned the league when they signed her up and blitzed a few rivals who could scarcely believe the news. With Jukic in their ranks anything could happen, the club will hope that brings a top four spot as the WSFL increasingly looks anyone’s to claim.
One to Watch: Gabbi Wheatley
The skipper was a standout in the debut campaign as her new club looked for established names as they increasingly look like a league powerhouse in waiting. Tenacious, energetic and always looking to play the ball forward the midfielder was dominant for Perth AFC as they claimed Div 2 in the outdoor game. Now to bring that quality to the courts of the Pro Futsal Centre.
