2018-2019 SFL Preview: South Perth FC
Last Season: 7th
The promotion controversy is confined to the past as South Perth look toward a second season in the SFL, pockets of potential riddling an up and down campaign last winter.
First on the list, depth. Dilan Patel, Luka Bergomi and Filip Rojnica are known quality. But too often South Perth looked to the bench to see two subs or juniors amongst red faces. As Hammond Park and Perth United can testify, the SFL takes no prisoners and depth this season looks key in determining if the club fight for finals or settle for mid table. Yohan Crampon is a step in the right direction as the vultures circle to pick at Ultra Tigers and Carioca. Gunanithi Nagarajah and Chandra Nagendran could be another two as the clock ticks down to the start of the season. Training both North and South of the river a huge point of difference. Anyone could come through the door.
Duc Tran versus experienced Catalonian Alex Herrera looks a battle for the number one shirt to give management a headache, or will Herrera focus on coaching? With the WSFL side finally talking out the silverware it’s all eyes on South Perth SFL to play their part in fulfilling the clubs potential. Will that be enough to draw Sean Byrne back to training or bring in a big fish?
Looking at you JM12.
Main Man: Roberto Boi
You can’t deny it. The former Fremantle man with the booming left foot has thrived in his new surroundings and his side look all the more structured for having him, coming desperately close to bloodying the noses of a few contenders last season. With the Italian claiming more of a say this season, he’ll dictate the tempo this time around and chime in with a few thunderbolts from range.
One to Watch: Duc Tran
Breakout campaign for the young star as he was thrown into the deep end for his debut and hasn’t missed a beat since. Player of the Round winner and South Perth number one. Dedicated goalkeeper training is a powerful thing. If Alex Herrera mentors and trains the young goalkeeper, his raw potential could kick on to Golden Glove contender.
